Recently,‘Goal!’ has been a common word both seen and heard. A horde of citizens gather together as they glue their eyes to the television screen with intense emotions of anxiety and excitement. Visualizing the screen, 22 men running after a ball, it sounds familiar... SOCCER!

The World Cup fever has advanced to many countries. With World Cup fans ranging from young toddlers to the elderly, inclusive of both genders, this has certainly gained the support from countless of people around the world. World Cup, only held once every four years, is an event everyone looks forward to. Regardless of whether those who follow up on World Cup are avid fans of soccer, many still continue to watch the soccer matches as this is the hot soccer season. Potentially good players within a soccer team are separated when they return to play for their own home country. Unlike usual matches whereby players within the same team may hail from different countries, World Cup is an exception. For World Cup matches, countries compete against one another with the aim of emerging victorious and become the champion team.

However, there are rising concerns that the World Cup has greatly affected office productivity. This applies to the working society of all countries in general. Due to the difference in time zones, host countries may have arranged for matches to be held in the afternoon. Whereas for people living in other parts of the world, the soccer matches only commence at night, or even in the middle of the night. As a result, employees often keep late nights during this period to watch the matches.

Thus, employees who report to work during the day, especially in the morning, tend to feel lethargic and sleepy. With a heavy mind and the urge to doze off, they stay unfocussed on their job. Distraction also plays a part when their minds wander off to the World Cup, instead of concentrating on their individual duties. As a result, work attitude is affected and the fall in productivity may lead to a standstill in production. This is evident when workers request for days of leave supported by ‘valid reasons’. In actual fact, they either want to catch up on their sleep or watch the matches held during their working hours. In relation to an extreme case, a China worker even proposed to resign in support of watching World Cup.

From my perspective, employees should try to be more understanding and put themselves in the shoes of their employees. The employers are clearly aware that this is only a temporary phase held over a few weeks. People will return to their usual lifestyles as soon as World Cup ends. An occasional event held once every four years, bosses should treat World Cup as an exception. Who knows? Bosses may be World Cup fanatics too.
Among employees who support the same countries, this builds up team spirit and they become more united after knowing that one another share a common idea.

Soccer bets have also increased due to the presence of World Cup. People vote by ‘buying’ for the team based on the one which they feel is most likely to win. Thus, this contributes to large percentage of their interest in watching the matches. These people watch World Cup for the sake of hoping that the country they have placed their vote for will win, so that they can earn extra money. Affecting office productivity may be a minimal concern to them.

Besides those who hold jobs, there are students who also stay up late at night to watch the soccer matches. Thus, they experience a lack of sleep and find it tough to pay full attention during lessons. Honestly, 'admiration' is the word to describe students who sacrifice their sleep to watch World Cup but are still determined to attend school the next morning. It will indeed be a waste to miss out on World Cup. To such students, both World Cup and studies are their priorities.

Although only 32 countries are qualified to participate in World Cup, live broadcasts from satellites via the television or even through online sites enable people from around the world to have the opportunity to watch the matches. Despite hectic schedules, World Cup fans still make it a point to stay tuned to matches. This shows the importance of World Cup to everyone. As such, World Cup has become the talk of the town. Currently, it is down to eight countries, followed by four and soon, it reaches the final two. Newspapers are publishing soccer scores daily and they are also conveyed to others through the word of mouth. In my view, the thrill of watching the matches is what people seek for compared to just knowing the scores.

May the best country win!

The World cup season has finally begun. Football fans are anticipating to watching the match and start their soccer craze. Football fans mostly comprises of adults. Employers seem to be concerned on the productivity of their employees.

Employees will be unable to concentrate on their assigned tasks and will shift their focus towards World Cup. Many will take leave and level of absenteeism will increase. A handful of employees might even lie to their employers and obtain a fake medical record just to watch the World Cup. Having late nights and short sleeps, employees will have lack of sleep. They will not produce quality work the next day. In the office, employees will tend to strike a conversation on football with their colleagues and get engrossed with the topic. As the World Cup is telecast in the middle of the working afternoon which is during the working hours, employees might watch the match from their office computers. Employees who are doing their work feel disturbed and distracted. Projects might be unable to progress smoothly and should be rescheduled since many people are passionate about the World Cup.

Employees should just accept it if they are unable to watch the match during their working hours. They can view it online after working hours. On the other hand, I feel that employers should understand the World Cup fever. I believe that employers themselves also watch the World Cup. Project deadlines are advised to due before and not during the World Cup season. After all, the World Cup comes round only every four years.

What comes every 4 years?
With 20 people chasing a ball during a match?
With happiness, joy, anger, tears, disappoinments and all kinds of emotion?
When games like this cause unexpected reactions?

Yes!!It's the WORLD CUP!!
After 4 years of waiting from the last World Cup in 2006.
Finally football lovers can watch 32 countries from over the world competing
to get the title which is what they all have been waiting for. However, did we
ever think of how will World Cup affect our daily life? World Cup matches are
broadcasted during the night in Singapore at the timing of 7pm, 10pm and 2.30am.
It would be a bad timing for football lovers who are working in Singapore to watch
the soccer match as they sacrifice their sleeping time to watch the match instead
of replenish their energy. This infact cause a huge headache on employers as employees
will be feeling half dead when they reach the office in the morning. It slows down their
working speed as well as the morale to do work as they are tired. More over, football lovers
would actually take fake leaveor long leave in order to watch their football match. This in
turn cause the company to lose manpower hence slowing down the workplace productivity. In addition, they would get themselves involved in group discussion chats online reviewing the recent match while on work. However, there are solutions in handling such issues in Singapore.
Companies can hire temporary staffs to cover their gap while allowing football lovers to enjoy the World Cup matches. In this way, the workers are satisfied and their morale is high. This will in turn affect their mentality in working as they are happy that they can watch the matches.

Similarly in China, almost 3/4 percentage of employees would consider watching match late at night. Some would even quit their job to watch World Cup. From these situations, we can see that the population are very engaged in World Cup. This is how World Cup is being viewed by the people.

In England, the World Cup are broadcasted in the afternoon where just few hours before their knock off timing. Workers would rush and complete their work in order to leave early so that they could watch their own nation playing in the qualifying round which sees them either packing their bags heading home or extending their stay. This infact affects the quality of the work that they produce as they rush to complete them.

World Cup has always been an event which is well known over the world. If football lovers would to miss this year's World Cup, they would have to wait for another 4 boring years before the excitement pours around again. This could also be one of the reason why so many people are eager to abandon their job and watch World Cup. In addition, as a student, I would also sacrifice my sleep in order to catch the World Cup match. Brazil vs Chile at 2.30am. My post stops here. I'll be heading to bed and getting up for the midnight match!!

Infact, the whole world watches World Cup.
Even the students, adults and who knows, lecturers and teachers?

People says one should always know himself or herself best, on the other hand, people do says one needs to be objective in seeing a clearer view. Thus, it does not seem perfectly right to do self-reflection. The article discussed about how self-reflection can leads to either creativity or depression, a route to distinction or destruction.

Eventually, why did people do self reflection? Firstly, it evaluates. It gives each person a way to rate the past performance according to moral values, cultures or any set of living standard. It can give a grade or current standing to clearly specify how much expected has been accomplished. Secondly, it reminds. It reminds oneself the target or goal that was preset for the certain period of time. In such a fast and dazzling society, it seems quite easy that one be distracted or loses focus on the target, goal or dream. Self reflection gives them an opportunity to reflect and reallocate their time and effort on the primary purposes.

However, there are always pros and cons in everything. Self reflection can lead to excessive self reproach and make one slip into depression. It will create more attention to one's personal desires, gradually, it might cause that person to be self-centered, or becoming selfish. Helen Keller said, 'The worst is not live in silence, but to be deaf to the sorrows of others and indifferent to their needs.'

In order to prevent that from happen, self reflection, like any medicine, should be appropriate in setting the dosage and its content also played a very important part. There is a need to keep self-reflection as objective as possible. However, it is evaluating a personal life, not checking a system's workability; it cannot get too systematic and impersonal. In summary, balance is the key.

Just as the article supposed, we can become more creative through self reflection. On top of that, self reflection seems more effective in goal setting and schedule planning to both organizations and individuals. So , let us live a better life through the art of self reflection, GET ALIVE, not just GET A LIFE.

Does self-reflection leads to depression? Self-reflection is where I think over and reflect on what I did over the past few days. It is the moment where I will think of the mistakes that I committed and the achievements that I achieved. In my perspective, depression often occurs to people who are too stressed, paranoid and think too much over certain matters. They tend to over self-reflect themselves. Different people may behave differently when they are depressed. Some may tend to react violently over the outcome and faces trouble accepting it. When one faces depression, they will be physically and mentally unstable.

According to the article, it states that artists and writers are more prone to face depression. Researches and doctors linked creativity to the depression state. They think that expressing their feelings and thoughts through writing and paintings leads to depression. Artists and writers will definitely need inspiration and have to think out of the box to draw the best piece and develop an interesting story. Others may misunderstand the way they self-reflect as facing depression. We should respect the way artists and writers work and think.

Self-reflection is good for everyone. By self-reflecting, you are self-examining and improving yourself. I agree that self-reflecting leads to creativity. People will think more and develop their own creativity.
Over the weeks, the article that affects me personally is plagiarism. After reading the article on plagiarism, I realise the importance of appreciating the author. I am more aware of how serious the consequences are in tertiary education if one commits plagiarism. Since more projects are coming which require more research, I am learning to cultivate the habit of not copying everything from the original source. By doing this, I will be able to develop my own opinions and not take the original source for granted.

What is self-reflection? In simple words, it means reflecting on oneself. Such as action and verbal language that one did and spoke respectively. This may seem to be a very simple task that anyone of us will be able to do it. However, with a deeper thought self-reflection leads to creativity which people could not even think about or even more, illusions that eventually leads to depression.

Human beings do make mistakes however we have been blessed with the freedom to do so. This is because we have the ability to correct these mistakes. Even if you have made a mistake you can reflect on it; it is because you can reflect on and repent your actions that you are able to undo mistakes.

Through self-reflection you can undo past deeds. If reflecting on your past with a pure heart, you will be able to wipe out all the records that have been written as losses, you can also erase with an ink eraser what you have written.

Mental health researchers and practitioners delve into the issue of self-reflection and concluded that 8 out of 10 of those suffering from the major depressive disorder are mainly the artists and writers. As artists and writers often need to think out of the box for creative new ideas that can attract more people to buy their books or even watch their show. Thus, they usually have to do self-reflection on their work while they think deeper to create more interesting ideas.

People who are more prone to be suffering from depression are those who have low self-esteem, who consistently view themselves and the world with pessimism, or who are readily overwhelmed by stress. If a person grows up in a pessimistic environment, in which discouragement is common and encouragement is rare, that person will develop a vulnerability to depression as well. A serious loss, chronic illness, relationship problems, work stress, family crisis, financial setback, or any unwelcome life change can trigger a depressive episode.

So if people start to feel depressed they should talk to someone or maybe a psychologist who can help to solve their problem. Before the illness worsen and get more serious to get back to normal self.

Upon seeing this phrase 'self-reflection leads to creativity or depression?', many questions and theories began to appear in my mind. It may seem absurd that a simple method of self-reflection can end up to a depressed state of mind. What defines self-reflection? On the surface, this word actually means to reflect on oneself, processing thoughts and need be, to make changes for the better. As we advance deeper within the meaning of this word, is there actually a chance whereby self-reflection leads to creativity, or even a more serious consequence, depression?

Research has shown that writers and artists are more commonly found to have depressive symptoms and disorders, as compared to the general population. Writers and artists need to think before they pen down their stories and paint their artwork respectively. Writers who have a flair for writing are able to capture the readers' minds and to evoke emotions in the readers' hearts. On the other hand, artists have the ability to convey meanings through the portrayal of their beautiful paintings. Simple as it may sound, but to be able to succeed in their goals is another issue. As a result, writers and artists are required to think before they commence on their work. Thinking can be a long and tedious process. Besides, each person also hopes to stand out among a crowd of other 'colleagues'.

Writers and artists try to be creative in every possible way. When they run out of brilliant ideas to carry on their work, this may cause them to suffer from depression. They have the ideas, but are they confident that their ideas will work out? Will their works be big hits?

Of course, it is unfair to discriminate writers and artists to be the ones who may suffer from depression as a result of always having to self-reflect, but to conceal their thoughts at the same time before revealing them to the readers or admirers of paintings . Ordinary workers or even students may also suffer from depression. Depression symptoms comprises of severe mood swings, loss of interest in activities, feelings of helplessness, self-loathing, appetite and sleep changes and attempts of suicide. It is unpredictable in terms of who may suffer from depression. However, symptoms persist for long periods before leading to the end result- depression. A positive reminder- one can walk out from depression, an essential factor is to have determination to emerge from the depression pit.

When one self-reflects after saying something or carrying out an action, it may be considered as an advantage to a certain extent. This helps to improve the behaviour for the better or to correct the action. To consistently reflect upon normal issues is fine. However, to dwell upon unhappy incidents all the time, especially for prolonged periods then becomes a problem. This builds up anger, frustration, anxiety and unhappiness emotions within the person. In time to come, the person will suffer from an inferiority complex and lose confidence in himself/herself. Those who self-reflect should reflect about an issue and get over with it. Through this, they can learn and be aware of their words said or action committed, instead of being depressed regardless of whether it is a minor or major issue. They should learn to let go and continue to lead a normal everyday life.

Creative ideas can be established within the process of self-reflection. When our minds start to reflect on an issue, this branches out to other similar issues that occurred bofore and this brings back past memories. Human brains are able to recall incidents etched in our minds. Through reflection, we can let our thoughts run free and wild and be creative, to come up with unique topics or subjects that are out of the box.

Regardless of whether self-reflection leads to creativity or depression, we should be concerned about the effects of the long route of self-reflection in the incorrect way. To self-reflect benefits the soul. As human beings with feelings, we should try to let go of past matters and look forward to future events. Most importantly, we should always maintain an optimistic mindset and regard self-reflection as a helpful way of thinking.

Other than Sports, Current Affairs have always turns out to be my interest. I love to read about news that are happening around in Singapore. For the past few weeks, I have been blogging about news that concerns either towards Singapore or worldwide. Such simple weekly blogging allow me to understand the situation of the news and urge myself to do more further research, adding more information into the post in the blog. Most importantly is that I have learn something in the articles that i have read such as the one on biodiversity and the dangers of ocean fish loss. These articles make me ponder on some of the mistakes that human has done and help reflects on why are human so selfish in destroying homes of the poor animals for our mankind benefit. Another article on Mother Tongue Language issue have also bring a sudden flashback towards my secondary school life in remembering that it is a language of our individual bilingualism. To be away from mother tongue for after some time, this article have showed me the importance of knowing my bilingualism instead of forgetting them since i have already passed my examinations.

To me, the article that have influenced me is the subject on plagiarism. In the beginning, understanding the meaning of what plagiarism is wasn't a problem to me. However, understanding the consequences of what plagiarism can bring is something that I have got to know way before hand. To be enrolled in a tertiary education now, the importance of plagiarism brings a sudden impact towards study life. Blogging about plagiarism helps me understand deeper into the topic and know the advantages and the disadvantages it can bring.

Overall, blogging is my hobby. Even though I have blog before, but due to time constrain when there are other better things such as watching television going on, I have stopped blogging. Now, since blogging is going on as a school work and it's a blog on current affairs issue, the more I must take this opportunity to initiate in blogging to get myself more updated and catch up with the world!

This world belongs to everyone and all goodness on it. Both articles are quite saddening that they pointed clearly how much endangerment that various species are facing, especially the marine habitats. Many had said the seas are never as clean as before, after subsequent oil spillage incidents and constant pollutions.

Ocean acidification has affected almost the entire marine population. As explained in an article that it is caused by excessive carbon dioxide (CO2) in the ocean. Unfortunately, such effects are mostly human-generated, by our excessive emission of CO2 on a daily basis. The water temperatures are also rising, making the sea environment less suitable for breeding and growth.

Secondly, global warming is depleting Antarctica rapidly. It causes the sea level to rise at an alarming rate, posing a great danger to most waterfront cities and towns. On top of that, it also reduces the availability for Antarctica’s species to breed and live. With that situation, many of them were under endangerment, or even close to extinction. The same problem also applies to the habitats in Arctic Circle, when glaciers become rivers and tundra become forests, the Arctic animals are losing foothold too.

Lastly, the constant pollutions also make these species become exposed to diseases and unnatural impairments. It totally makes them unsuitable for human consumptions. Perhaps, before they were caught by fishermen’s net, the entire population has shrunken and extinct.

Thus, in order to prevent such tragedies, there is urgency in implementing appropriate measures and regulations. There are short term and long term goals and expectations before we can actually improve these situations. The practical move will be controlled fishing, to allow them to breed and reproduce at a controllable rate. If possible, an artificial sea or a converted lake could be used to breed endangered species. However, the most important way would be reducing the pollutions that are happening every second to the oceans and all its habitats. I agreed fully to Simon Stuart, the Chairman of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission, that “Ordinary people are not powerless to stop these tragic losses.” In fact, it only takes one’s initiative to making the world better.

The world will soon encounter the nightmare-extinction of species.
In poorer countries, fish is vital for them as it contributes to their source of income and as their main animal protein source. We cannot possibly ask the government to forbid them to go fishing. Introducing marine preservations will be a good idea to keep the ocean fish population growing. The idea is to allow female fish to grow to full size, thus increasing their fertility. Demand of fish is increasing and we need to both fulfil the demand and also sustain the fish population. Environment factors are the most that affects the animals. Human has to be responsible for their actions. Air, water and land pollution pose an impact on the animals living on land and water. Preventing oil spilling, less pollution from factories and littering can help to save the environment.

It is important to create public awareness and the consequences of its loss to human well-being. We can’t let more species to get endangered. If this happens, the further generation will not be aware of the current species living. The government has already implement measures. We do also play an important role in sustaining the species.

Fish, animals, trees, plants, these are the examples of living things which could suffer from extinction. We can say that the extinction of these living things are actually caused by mankind.
Since the goal of continuous development have been an issue towards mankind, companies or factories oversea have been clearing forest for more land usage for the operation of their goal. Similarly, these clearing of forests are usually operated using fire due to cheap operation cost.
Huge amount of Carbon Dioxide is produced when such operation occurs. These emitted Carbon Dioxide actually causes global warming and this is where it threatens animals such as the ones living in the arctic area.

We can see that one simple mistake mankind make can actually affect many animals, plants and trees from different places. Their habitat have been ruined and there is no way these animals and plants can reverse the situation without the help of thoughtful mankind. In the world now, clearing of forests is only a part of developing, we must not forget that some of the cleared forests are used as factories and such factories again emit Carbon Dioxide. From a small situation like this, we can see how has mankind caused severe damage to the environment causing several animals to lose their natural habitat and close to extinction. These are some of the factors that caused damage to biodiversity on land.

Fish has been a common food for mankind. Sometimes smaller fishes are food of bigger fishes. In the world now, many people have purchasing power. They can afford to buy fishes for their meal. Fishes are one of the most expensive food compared to chicken, duck or vegetables. So there is a high demand for fishes. Similarly, fishers would catch more fishes as possible to earn money or have it as their main animal protein source in the poorer countries. Ocean fishes have now estimated come to extinction in the year 2050 if mankind do not think of their future. Which means the next generation won't get to enjoy fishes as meal. A high demand in fishes prompt fishers to fish for large amount leaving the poor fishes little time for reproduction purposes. In this way, it could lead to a faster extinction rate.

There's also information that proposals on endangered species were defeated Japan. This shows that there is a slim chance of protecting our future flock of fishes. From the above situations, we can see that mankind is the cost of endangering these living things. Maybe now, we don't care. Maybe then, we regret. But it is all too late to decide when the time comes. Therefore, mankind are urged to take such problems into consideration in order to save ourselves and the poor endangered species for a better future.

To marked 5th June World Environment Day. An event was held with the aim of honouring environmentalists who have played an active role in accent human impact over the years. Global warming effects the rising heat and seasonal changes, shrinking biodiversity and animals on the brink of extinction are a stark reminder.

We owe alot to the world we living in. It becomes important to save the earth in any way we can. If we cannot stop many people from over fishing then ocean fish could disappear in 40 years times. Thus, we have to enhance environmental issues to the public so that everyone can play a part to make our world worth living. Poor fishermen can only earned their income through catching of various fishes. If they do not have enough fish to sell to the wet market, they will not be able to feed their family.

Every year a country will take the initiative to host this celebration. The UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It focuses on resources that promote a lifestyle with low carbon emissions. This would effect the environment on the planet and have an impact on quality of life.

.Saturday, June 5, 2010 ' 12:49 PM Y
5th June is World Environment Day. How many people have actually heard of that annual occasion? Generally, citizens living in an urban city lead hectic lives. Their lives are constantly packed with activities. As we walk to and fro busy streets, do we even pause to ponder over what changes has occurred to the environment today?

On the surface, the environment looks fine. We do experience rainy seasons and there are natural biodiversity that surround us. But if we think deeper within, we will ask ourselves: Has the weather become more humid these days? What about global warming, has it worsened? How about acid rain? Any extinction of species?

The environment today has become much more different compared to what it has been 50 years or even a century ago. This may be due to industrialisation and technological changes as the world advances to a modern society. Many decades back, environmental issues did not even come across the people's minds. Thus, only in the 1970s did the people start having 'Save the Environment' campaigns and implementing policies to help conserve the the environment such as to reduce the rate of fishing in seawaters. The US Protection Environmental Agency was created in 1970.

Hosted by United Nations, leaders from all around the world meet up frequently to discuss enviromental issues. In my opinion, this is a good start. From leaders of the countries, whatever useful environmental information they take back to their home country will be passed down to their citizens. Therefore, citizens will also be aware of the need for environmental conservation. To create enviromental awareness, newspapers have also published details of the climate talks among countries.

As we gaze up into the sky and see the glaring sunlight, do we visualise the ozone layer, how it has been thinning as the years go by. As a result, ultraviolet rays are able to pass through and the rays are harmful for the skin, especially if we are exposed to it for long-term periods.

Another big environmental issue is regarding endangered species on a verge of extinction. Fishermen fish daily for fishes. Essentially, they rely on fishing as their source of income and their daily meals. To them, fishes are 'free', directly fished from the sea and they need not fork out a single cent. However, fish stocks are running out. The Green Economy Report estimates that there are 35 million people fishing around the world on 20 million boats. With numbers hitting millions, this is a very serious issue and poses a huge problem. It is extremely difficult to ensure that all the 35 million people cut down on their fishing fleets. Poor fishermen may have no idea that overfishing is harmful to the environment. Besides, there are millions of people who consume on fish daily. This is a factor that is hard to control.

As knowledgable living creatures living in planet Earth, we should learn to conserve and preserve the environment for future generations to enjoy. With the aid of every Earth member, it will make a big difference to the environment. I applaud environmentalists and those who take initiatives to come up with ideas and take the effort to start saving planet Earth.

Plagiarism has always been a problematic issue in literature circle. Many writers have been facing criticisms or accusations over the years. Now, such problem also arose in education system, including the primary education. With advanced technology, many model essays and quotes had been posted online to share with the mass. However, with the similar technology, these became very easily accessible and targets for plagiarist. Thus, from the articles, it is not unusual to spot students doing plagiarism. However, it seems to increase its severity since this has occurred also to primary students.

Several measures should be taken to control even to primary school students, such as implementing a policy for the entire education system. A fail grade that had already been used in tertiary institutions is one of the model solutions. On top of that, this issue can be used as a topic in moral education in primary and secondary education.

To further discuss on local education, primary education should remove the spelling and dictation test as much as possible. Such citation of words and letters to a certain extent distracted the focus of students to attain understanding and correct usage of words and phrases they had learnt.

Bringing matter to the adult world, local City Harvest Church’s senior pastor, Reverend Kong Hee, has recently received critics on a few books that he authored. He, too, was accused of plagiarism of other preachers’ doctrines. After that, the publisher commented in rebuttal that Reverend Kong was quoting instead of plagiarizing. In addition, he had also sought permissions from various original authors before doing those quotations. However, it is clearly that the publisher's omissions in indication brought forth this misunderstanding. Thus, from this example, it can also plainly explain the real difference between approved quotation and unauthorized plagiarism. More importantly, it highlighted the importance to verify any quotations before the accusations arose.
